Alex Morris
Vocal Evolution have been privileged to have Alex Morris as their Music Director since 2008.
Alex took an interest in music when he began learning the violin at the age of six. Over his primary and high school years he took an avid interest in all things musical including choirs and bands as well as playing major rolls in both dramatic and musical productions run by the school and groups outside of the school community.
Whilst in his final year of study at St. Stephen’s School Alex won WA Youth Music’s Tempest Collegium Prize after writing a piece for the Collegium String Orchestra. On leaving high school, Alex began his tertiary education at the University of WA. In 2006 he transferred to a Bachelor of Music majoring in composition and completed his degree in 2009. He also acted as President of the Music Students’ Society whilst studying at UWA.
In late 2007 Alex was commissioned to write an arrangement for the WA Symphony Orchestra for their performances with Ben Lee. This led to subsequent work with the orchestra on an administrative level and in November 2009 Alex was employed full-time as Orchestra Manager.
Alex joined Vocal Evolution as a singer in 2005 and quickly became part of the music team as a Section Leader and soon after was appointed Assistant Music Director. In June 2008 Alex accepted the invitation to become the Music Director of Vocal Evolution.
Alex led the chorus to its first gold medal at the AAMBS National Convention in Hobart in September 2009. He also sang with his quartet Nexus at this convention and they placed fourth nationally.
Alex has arranged a number of pieces that Vocal Evolution have performed in recent times. He is also looking forward to participating in educational opportunities overseas, recording a CD with Vocal Evolution and helping the chorus to fulfill an invitation to represent Australia at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Chorus Contest in 2011.
